Just one more show with a set of CCs for Chesapeakes this year, which of course is LKA.
Many now turn to beating, picking up and wildfowling. I always think that this is the time of year when we put the show bag down and pick up the game carrier bag. Or at least this is as it was for many years, now however we have open shows that put on Chesapeake classes all year round. Training of our dogs for work never seems to stop, with groups and individual training available all year round. Even more interesting is how young dogs take to live game. We have only had one shoot day so far, this was to have been on partridge but due to the intense rain and high winds the day was postponed.
Kirsty Watts is cock-a-hoop at the moment – after winning Novice Dog/Novice Handler at the CBRC Autumn Working Test with Oakleaf Manor Bay Of Oakmarsh JW (imp DEU), then jumped in her van with all her dogs and travelled over to Europe to breed to Canadian import DKCH(U)NUCH Dockcove’s Rum Runner. Owned by Birgitte Jorgensen Rum is by Dockcove’s Finnegan Can. SH x Huntersbest Tiki Surprise Can. MH. Returning home the excellent news that Amie & Naomi Mellersh-Tett’s Oakmarsh Of Roguehart by Penrose Marshgunner x CH Oakmarsh Freedom SGWC after gaining a clear eye certificate received an elbow score of 0 and a hip score of 0. There are several dogs now from these combinations which are producing 0 scores on elbows and hips which is all good news for the breed.
This litter is just one of a flurry of litters planned for this winter, hopefully we will see more puppies being shown and worked next year.
It is with a heavy heart that I have had to say goodbye to one of the most amazing Chesapeake bitches CH, Lux CH Penrose Away With A Fairy SGWC, Euro19 – Tinker at the age of 12. Always at my side and faithful to the end, suffering badly from arthritis in the last year. She would howl all day if left at home on a shoot day, it was easier and quieter to take her with me. Those who work dogs will know exactly what I mean. Although Tinker was obviously in pain this did not stop her from zooming off after runners or sweeping in the woods for fallen game. Tinker was by breed record holder CH, Swe Ch/ SE UCH Penrose Jack Tar SGWC x CH American By Design SGWC. One is lucky to have a good looking show dog or a good working dog or a good producer, Tinker was all three. In the ring she won 10 CCs (not shown extensively), winning at several shows in Europe with numerous titles. She walked through her SGWC as did her parents. Tinker produced 4 litters; most all of her offspring went to working homes. One of her sons CH, Lux CH Penrose Incredible Euro Winner, SGWC was the youngest Chesapeake to receive a CC and the BIS at 6 months old. SH CH Penrose Let Fly came from her second litter and in her last litter Penrose Peatbog Fairy went to Katrin Golze who competed in the German team at the CLA Game Fair in 2023 & 24 winning the Commentator’s Award in 23 and the highest placed AoV Retriever in 24. Of course she will be missed and of course she will not be forgotten, this will be reinforced every time I look at the progeny she has given us
