Chesapeakes are not a breed to just be there. Intelligent with an active brain they crave a job. Selectively bred for 200 years as a wildfowling dog Chesapeakes will adapt to many different forms of work. Those who know me will know I desire good looking working dogs. Back in the 80s I remember competing and placing in a field trial on one day then winning a BOB with the same dog the next day.
In previous breed notes I wrote that USA breed specialist Dyane Baldwin judged for the last time earlier this month at Valey Forge KC. She awarded BOB to Beverly Matthias’ Longmeadow Just You Wait “Eliza”. By Longmeadow Ray Of Light x Longmeadow Miss Daisy Maybelle, bred by Laura Chambers & Rochelle Kimbrough. They then went on to win the Sporting Group and finished up winning BIS and owner/handler Res BIS. The next day they placed 1st in Obedience Open and 2 1st places in Rally Novice. Eliza is only 22 months old, which is amazing.
At the same show Mark Brookes won Winners Bitch (similar to a CC) with Longmeadow My Fair Lady. This past weekend Mark and “Tegan” again won a Winners Bitch, making Tegan into a new American Champion. She is by Longmeadow Think Differently x CH Penrose Jasmine. Jasmine was out of SEU(U) CH Penrose Ripple My Fancy who was herself by CH Penrose Wise Guy x CH Penrose Fire Water.
If you have exported any of your dogs and it is competing please let me know. I would be delighted to hear from you. Before export regulations became more strict many UK Chesapeakes were exported to many countries, very little has ever been acknowledged for the amazing achievements gained by UK bred Chesapeakes that have gone worldwide.
The last Championship show of the year, LKA, was a delight to attend. Big rings, warm, clean, lots of shops with everyone in the Christmas spirit wearing the biggest array of twinkle and sparkle I have seen. Mentioning dual purpose well done to Kirsty Watts who, as well as being one of the most active show goers with her Oakmarsh dogs, is also keen to work them. Attending local shoots Kirsty was out working her dogs in the beating line the day before LKA. What a thrill it was for her to finish the year by winning the BCC with Oakmarsh Freedom, she then went on to win BOB. Last year she gained the SGWC and thus becomes the latest Full Champion Chesapeake. There was a double success for Kirsty when Freedom’s daughter Oakmarsh Little Acorn won the Junior Bitch class picking up the last points needed to gain her Junior Warrant.
Pam Blay received an entry of 32 – 13d, 19b, 5a. BOB & BCC Watts’ Oakmarsh Freedom SGWC, by Cheselbay Amsbry x SH CH Oakmarsh Chestnut; RBCC & BV Pont’s SH CH Oakmarsh Dancing Diva; DCC Mahon-Hunns, Hunns & Newton’s SH CH Arnac Bay Huron At Bergelle JW; RDCC Thomas & Playle’s Riptide Gentlemens Relish; BSB Blaber, Blaber & Blaber’s Oakmarsh Laural.
Many Chesapeake exhibitors do not compete in Stakes classes, Kirst Watts however enjoys the Stakes classes as much as she does the Breed. This year she has been entering her team of Oakmarsh dogs in the RKC Breeders Stakes. It is amazing and truly remarkable that she has finished the year nearly at the top, pipped at the post by the lovely Vizsla team and lying in 8th position overall. What is most remarkable is that she has been competing with a team of puppies for most of the year.
Another Chesapeake passing the Bronze Good Citizen at LKA was Baymoss Tweed At Penrose. If anyone else did the test at LKA please let me know.
Stewarding for the stewards at SWKA one gets to meet and comes to know all of the stewards over the 4 days, some steward for the first time while others have many years’ experience. Some of these are show secretaries, chief stewards, judges etc, all with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Quite a lot of these people are RKC members, one gentleman came in proudly wearing his green badge, telling that after many years he had now been accepted as a member of the RKC. Smiling from ear to ear this meant so much to him.
