At Hitchin Show under judge Alexandra Adshead BOB Watts’ Oakmarsh Freedom SGWC; RBOB Watts’ Oakleaf Manor Bay of Oakmarsh.

Another clash of events was when the CBRC training day and working test was on the same day as South Western Gundog, although 3 Chessies entered sadly all were absent. I hope that the exhibitors of the 3 Chesapeakes informed the show that they were going to be absent, if not for good manners then for the sake of the judge. I recall one such occasion where a new judge judging the breed for the first time had taken much pride in being invited to judge. For weeks she had looked for the right clothes to wear, child minders were engaged while her and her partner travelled 3 hours each way to the show. The time came to judge and dogs called for a number of times, no dogs came forward. As one can imagine this was hugely disappointing and very upsetting. These were the only classes for this judge to adjudicate. They left in great sadness.

The big news this week is the World Dog Show, a super event I would recommend everyone goes to. I have been to quite a few WD, European and Euro shows, they have all been interesting and enjoyable. Sometimes I’ve flown to watch or travelled by car to compete. They are different and there are a few more regulations. Every FCI recognised breed will have classes; 1 entry per dog; dogs enter the ring in catalogue order; passports and or other health certificates are required on entry to the show and usually there is a vet inspection just inside the gates, so always allow extra time for getting in. Not many Chessie exhibitors from the UK have shown on the continent, I have been going across the channel on and off for years. First, I went with Dutch CH Penrose Amazing Grace to Holland, then with several others to different countries.

Christine Mayhew and Jackie Simpson travelled up to Sweden for The Chesapeake Club Show some years ago, winning BOB, RBOB & BP under last year’s Club Championship show judge Robin Heskin.

Christine Mayhew with Jo Middleton have recently been travelling over to Western Europe to some of the shows there. It is expensive to travel, stay and enter, but the advantage is it’s different, very interesting, you almost never know the judge and the entries are usually low in number, plus if you do win you may come back with armfuls of rosettes and trophies which you get to keep. I did remember winning a BOB in Belgium, as did a friend of mine. If you stayed for the group you were presented with a foot long piece of twine, we never quite worked out what it was supposed to be for! All dogs are judged first against the breed standard and graded, your dog must gain excellent to come back in to challenge for best of sex and so on.

At this year’s World Dog Show held in Zagreb, Croatia where the entry was limited to 4,000 dogs. There were a cluster of 3 shows one could enter, with entry fees as much as €335 per dog for all three shows. The World with 18 entries, The Croatia Winner with 9 entries and the International Spring Dog Show with 2 entries. Jo Middleton was the only British exhibitor, travelling the 1000+ miles each way with Arnac Bay Hebe & Arnac Bay Jellicoe. In total 5 dogs came from Switzerland; 3 each from Slovakia & The Czech Republic; 2 each from Greece, France and the UK, with 1 from Italy. Looking through the catalogue I was very pleased to see a number of dogs were influenced by UK bloodlines – Cinnamonscent Masterpiece at Bbs and Cinnamonscent Abracadabra are by Baymoss Taylor (by CH Penrose Incredible x Penrose Octopussy) bred by Greg Raby; Alonzo Ice Little Grizzly and Arya Selena Little Grizzly (siblings) and Chesapeakeheart Hulk are all by CH Nunneyswood Ice Breaker, bred by Margerat Woods; Weatherdeck Polo at Cinnamon is out of CH Weatherdeck Arnac Bay Gudgeon (Imp USA) (out of Arnac Bay Arapaho); Yes Yes New Coco Kelecsky Poklad by Penrose Zodiac.

Under judge Jarmer Sigrid (Austria) judging The World Dog Show, there were 6 dogs and 12 bitches, 2 were absent, 14 graded excellent. BOB Nichole Grütter’s Next Generations I’ Am Woodford; BOS Joy Middleton & Christine Mayhew’s Arnac Bay Hebe; RD Jana Svecova’s Alonzo Ice Little Grizzly; RB Mgr. Sona Sehnaliková’s Cocochanell My Heart New Line Treasure; BJ Maria Kapsali’s Cinnamonscent Abracadabra; BV Mgr. Sona Sehnaliková’s Yes Yes New Coco Kelecsky Poklad.

At the Croatia Winner Show Konrad Tijana (Serbia) out of an entry of 9 (1a), 2d 7b. BOB Middleton & Mayhew’s Arnac Bay Hebe; BOS Kapsali’s Weatherdeck Polo at Cinnamon; BJ Middleton & Mayhew’s Arnac Bay Jellicoe; BV Sehnaliková’s Yes Yes New Coco Kelecsky Poklad.

At the International Spring Dog Show 2 entries for judge Ficko Matija (Croatia) BOB Middleton & Mayhew’s Arnac Bay Hebe; BJ Middleton & Mayhew’s Arnac Bay Jellicoe.

The 2025 World Dog Show will again be held in Helenski, 8th to 10th of August, Group 8 will be judged on Sunday the 10th, the Chesapeake judge is Bo Skalin from Sweden. The Circuit Show is on Thursday the 7th August held in Nessukeskus, the Chesapeake judge is Eeva Rautala from Finland, the Retriever Group judge BOB is Richard Bott.
