I am often asked from readers who handles which dog at shows, along with the general results. This came to the fore at SKC, so I will try my best to find out for readers or those interested who handles what. Years ago we all handled our own dogs, today there are several professionals handling and a number of dogs that are multi owned. When entering your dog you are asked if your dog is going to be handled and if so who by. Very rarely is this ever printed in a catalogue.

Omitted from the results at Bath were a few handlers – Maddy Mahon-Hunns, co-owner, handled Glaneils Dont Worry Be Happy 1st LB; Emily Evans handled Arnac Bay Jellicoe JW 2nd LB; James Newton co-owner handled Glaneils Daydream Believer 2nd OB.

Lorna Murray messaged to say she had a very nice evening at Selkirk Canine Society Dog Match, winning BV and Best in Match with Takoda Nathan.

Huw Jones organised and ran the selection test for the GB Euro Challenge Retriever team who will compete this year on the first day of the CLA Game Fair. This challenge has run for quite a long time and is a popular competition for teams throughout Europe. Judges for the selection test were Mike Larkin, Iain Marshalsay, Roy Morris & Barney Williams. The event was well supported and run in South Wales. Those successful in being selected were Andy Fisher Golden, Shayne Price Labrador and Anthony Ciraolo with his home bred Chesapeake bitch Franeo Ebbing Tide, by SH CH Next Generations Chesepi Range Rider (imp USA) x Northsolway Sand Sprite at Franeo (AI). I am sure there will be other Chesapeakes competing at this years CLA, why not come along and support, plus if you are a member of BASC you can apply for free entry.

Also competing at a working test this past weekend were members of the Working Minority Retriever Club, kindly hosted by Fleur and Mark Bament in Somerset. Judges were A panel Helena Sully and non-panel judge John Bint. I am delighted to see that 1st place in Novice went to Deb Herring and her home bred Battsrock Sweet Child O Mine WGC, by Franeo Original Long Gunner At Pixierock x Sharbae Rebel Rebel. This is another excellent result for Chesapeakes.

Many congratulations to Chris Hutt  and Ed Aldridge who after many years have decided to tie the knot. The wedding was a small, quiet family affair and close friends. Chris looked stunning in an ivory outfit. 6-year-old granddaughter Beatrice, also in ivory, was the prettiest of the flower girls.

The first time I ever visited Crufts was back in the early 70s when it was held at Earls Court. It was an awe-inspiring event for someone owning their first dog, not however until the early 80s did I start exhibiting Chesapeakes there. Last shooting season one of the beaters on one of the shoots gave me a 1984 Crufts catalogue, it is quite remarkable to see how much has changed in the past 40 years. Not only did we not have CCs back then but we did not have our own classes. At the back of the catalogue we were in the Any Variety Terrier or Gundog NSC. Entered in the catalogue all together bit in breed order there were 4 Glen Of Imaal Terriers; 3 Brittany Spaniels; 21 GWPs; 33 Irish Red & White Setters; 8 Italian Spinones  and 8 Chesapeakes. Those exhibiting were Pat Cooper – 1; Dereck & Linda Hunter (Hall) 1; myself 3; Richard Playle 1 and Lady Spencer-Smith (Mayhew) 2.

It is very noticeable also how much the Gamekeeper classes have now grown and changed. Back then there were just 4 classes, Retriever, Labrador and Curly Coat; Retriever Flatcoat and Golden; AV Sporting Spaniel and AV Gundog. These classes were confined to full or part time keepers only, no Chesapeakes were entered.

Pinned to the inside of this catalogue are the marked pages from the Crufts 1985 Labrador Classes. If anyone would like these pages please contact me.
